PLANET CHAOS is the fifth album by CARCARIASS, founded in Besancon / France in 1991. During my research about the band, I couldn’t help but get the impression that the so-called „experts“ don’t quite agree on the style. You can choose from “Melodic Death Metal” (according their official Band-Homepage), “Technical Death Metal”, “Brutal Death Metal”, “Melodic Trash Metal” – free of choice. I personally never participated in this annoying discussion about genre, sub-genre, sub-sub-genre, sub-sub-sub-genre, etc.. I’m “Old School” and keep it relatively simple – I like it or not. I won’t make a statement about the supposed genre here either, I rather tell you my personal impressions.

I was positively impressed, listening to it for the first time, by the fact that each of the guys is a virtuoso with his instrument. The Band is influenced by different styles and genres. The album it exciting and diversified – it was big fun to listen through it. “Classic structured” songs, meaning with Vocal-Sequences, alternate with exclusively instrumental tracks including partially anthem-like, voluminous parts. The vocals, of course „growled“, are more of an „accessory“ as the dominating main ingredient – focus is definitely harmonies and the instrumental piece, which doesn’t affect the album in the least. These guys are excellent virtuosos across the board exactly knowing what they do. The harmonies by the two „Guitar-Heroes“ Pascal Lanquetin and Jerome Lachenal are crystal clear, perfectly arranged and executed. The powerful Drums by Bertrand Simonin, supplemented by Raphael Couturier’s energetic Bass Guitar are simply awesome – a “badass power pack”. They provide the base for the impressive overall package.

Even I’m basically open about many styles and genres I have to admit Death Metal is not always my first choice. However, this album convinced me again that it’s worthwhile giving all directions at least a chance. I am very positive about what the four dudes out of France accomplished.

At the end of my reviews I usually recommend my two “favorites” to listen to – not with this compilation. PLANET CHAOS is one of the rare albums I reviewed, I can’t decide on. Each track “puts me under its spell” in a different way. It’s an album to listen to from the first to the last song, no weaknesses or “skip candidate“. I give 9 out of 10 points – “well done guys”.
