SHADES OF GRAY

::: english below :::

With a music career spanning nearly 4 decades, Myke Gray’s introduction to Rock & Roll came at the tender age of 13, when legendary guitarist, Bernie Torme, invited Myke to make a guest appearance with him at the London Marquee Club. The first song he ever played live was a cover of „Under My Wheels“ by Alice Cooper, which had him trading solos with the former Gillan guitarist. This life changing moment set him on a path for much greater things.

In 1988 Phil Mogg asked him to play guitar for UFO at a Metal Hammer sponsored event at the London Astoria. This performance brought him to the attention of Iron Maiden Manager Rod Smallwood, who became his Manager for the next decade. Even though playing with UFO raised his public profile, Myke always had aspirations of securing a recording contract for his own band JAGGED EDGE. After several failed line ups and a Tour supporting Ozzy Osbourne, JAGGED EDGE eventually signed to Polydor Records in 1990.

Their first release was a 5 track Mini Album entitled „Trouble“ and later the same year, they released their first full Studio Album „Fuel For Your Soul“, which was produced by Jeff Glixman at Rockfield Studios. The release of these albums led them to tour with artists such as VIXEN, The Dan Reed Network, Bruce Dickinson,THUNDER and David Lee Roth, as well as their own Headline Tours. JAGGED EDGE stopped recording and touring in 1992.

Under the guidance of Manager Rod Smallwood, Myke Gray then went on to work with IRON MAIDEN’s Bruce Dickinson. First playing on the Singer’s Comic Relief Single, a cover of the Alice Cooper classic „Elected“, which reached the UK Top 20. And then playing on the IRON MAIDEN’s Singer’s next two attempted Solo Albums. One was produced by Chris Tsangarides & the other by Keith Olsen. Eventually these recordings were released as bonus tracks to the „Balls To Picasso“ Album in 1994.

At the same time Myke Gray was forming his second band SKIN. SKIN signed to Parlophone Records in 1993 and released their debut album in 1994. It smashed into the UK Top 10 and the Singles „Money“ and „Tower of Strength“ become Top 20 Hits. The success of this album led to support Tours with LITTLE ANGELS and THUNDER, as well as countless Headline Tours around the UK. They received an invitation to play at the „Monster’s of Rock Festival“, open for BON JOVI at Gateshead Stadium and perform at the „Gibson Night of 100 Guitars“ at Wembley Arena. Further touring took them into Europe & Japan supporting WHITESNAKE and HELLOWEEN respectively. In 1996 SKIN released a second album for Parlophone Records entitled „Lucky“. The following year SKIN signed to Snapper Records, released „Experience Electric“ and in 1998 the Live Album „Hasta la Vista Baby!“. It was a recording of the final show on their Farewell Tour at the London Astoria.

The emotional end to SKIN led Myke Gray to take a break from being in a band and live performances: He then concentrated his energy into the life of a Session Musician. He played on hundreds of adverts ranging from Coca-Cola to Durex. He then took the first step into becoming a producer himself and created music for companies such as „FoxKids“ and „Frosties“ among many others. He also had time to create his third musical project SCHISM. They released one album entitled „Don’t Try This At Home“ and was written and produced entirely by Myke Gray. This band was very much a departure from his Classic Rock roots and was more directed towards Pop Punk audience. They toured with bands such as VIOLENT DELIGHT, FARCE and even THUNDER. Around the same time, Myke Gray played bass for the American Rock Band MUST and toured supporting DEF LEPPARD and THUNDER.

It had now been 10 years since SKIN had performed live and by a strange twist of fate, Myke Gray was approached by Andy Copping and Live Nation, to reform the band and perform on the Main Stage at the 2009 „Download Festival“. The success of this performance led to a nationwide Headline Tour plus the release of an Acoustic Album entitled „Up Close & Personal“ and a brand new Studio Album entitled „Breaking The Silence“. Both of which were released on Myke Gray’s own Record Label „Born To Rock Records“. They also supported the LITTLE ANGELS and performed at the 2011 „High Voltage Festival“.

The SKIN reunion had reignited Myke Gray’s desire to play and write music again and he formed his fourth band RED WHITE & BLUES. They released their one and only album entitled „Shine“ in 2011 on Born To Rock Records and toured with WHITESNAKE, CHICKENFOOT, THE QUIREBOYS and LYNYRD SKYNYRD and were invited to play at the „Download Festival“. Both, SKIN and RED WHITE & BLUES, stopped recording and touring in 2012.

The collapse of these two bands saw  MykeGray take a 5 year break from music, but in 2017 he returned with the release of his first Aolo album entitled „Shades of Gray“. An entirely instrumental album with the exception of one Song entitled „Take Me Home“. The success of this album led to invitations to play at the „Download Festival“ 2018, the „Steelhouse Festival“, HRH, „Planet Rock Winters End Festival“, as well as opening for the BLACK STAR RIDERS. In 2020 he also embarked on his first ever headline tour of the UK.

2021 saw the release of Myke Gray’s second Solo Album under the band name SHADES OF GRAY. This was the first album that he sang the Lead Vocals on, as well as play all the instruments except drums. He has also just played at the „Rock & Blues Custom Show“ and „Stonedead Festival“.
